Compare veneer and composite bonding prices — porcelain vs composite, per-tooth costs, how long each lasts, and what to ask before committing.
Veneers and composite bonding both reshape the front surface of teeth to fix chips, gaps, worn edges and discolouration that whitening can't shift. Composite bonding sculpts tooth-coloured resin directly onto the tooth in a single visit, usually without drilling — typically £150–£400 per tooth. Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells made in a laboratory and bonded on over two or three visits — typically £400–£1,000 per tooth — with better stain resistance and longevity (10–15 years vs 5–7 for composite), but they usually involve removing a small amount of enamel, which makes them irreversible. Both are cosmetic, so neither is available on the NHS. Because most smile makeovers involve four to ten teeth, per-tooth prices multiply quickly: get an itemised written plan, ask to see the dentist's own before-and-after cases at consultation, and be wary of pressure selling — no reputable practice needs you to sign on the day.

Composite bonding typically costs £150–£400 per tooth; composite veneers (full-coverage composite) sit in the same range. Porcelain veneers typically cost £400–£1,000 per tooth depending on the ceramic and laboratory used. A typical 'smile line' of 6–10 teeth multiplies these figures, so always compare itemised full-case quotes.
Bonding adds resin to part of a tooth — an edge, chip or gap — while a veneer (composite or porcelain) covers the whole front surface. Composite is done in one visit and is repairable; porcelain is lab-made over two or more visits, resists staining better and lasts longer, but usually requires removing some enamel, making it irreversible.
Composite bonding and composite veneers typically last 5–7 years before needing repair or refreshing — they can chip and pick up stain, though repairs are simple. Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years. Nail-biting, pen-chewing and grinding shorten all of these; a night guard protects the investment if you grind.
Not for cosmetic reasons. The NHS only provides veneers or similar restorations where there's a clinical need — for example rebuilding a tooth after trauma — as part of a Band 3 course (£326.70 in England). Purely aesthetic veneers and bonding are always private.
Porcelain veneers usually require light enamel reduction (around 0.3–0.5mm), which is permanent — those teeth will always need a veneer or crown. Minimal-prep and no-prep options exist for suitable cases, and composite bonding is normally drill-free and reversible. Ask your dentist exactly how much tooth reduction your plan involves before consenting.
Yes, if you want a lighter overall shade — veneers, bonding and fillings don't bleach, so the dentist matches them to whatever shade your natural teeth are at the time. Whiten first (allowing a couple of weeks for the shade to settle), then have the cosmetic work matched to the new colour.
