Dentures
Compare denture prices — full and partial dentures, acrylic vs chrome, private costs vs the NHS Band 3 charge, and implant-retained options.
Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable appliance: full (complete) dentures replace every tooth in a jaw, while partial dentures clip around remaining teeth on an acrylic or lighter cobalt-chrome framework. Privately, partial dentures typically cost £300–£800 and full dentures £600–£2,500 per jaw, with the range reflecting materials, the number of fitting stages and laboratory quality — premium private dentures involve more try-ins and highly characterised teeth. On the NHS, dentures are Band 3 (£326.70 in England, covering the whole course including any extractions), which makes NHS dentures far cheaper than mid-range private equivalents. If loose lower dentures are the problem, implant-retained dentures — two or more implants that the denture clips onto — transform stability, typically from around £4,000 per arch. Dentures need relining or remaking every 5–7 years as gums change shape, and clinical dental technicians (GDC-registered) can legally provide replacement dentures direct to patients who already wear them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do dentures cost?▼
Privately: partial dentures typically £300–£800 (acrylic at the lower end, cobalt-chrome frameworks at the upper), full dentures £600–£2,500 per jaw depending on materials and the number of fitting stages. On the NHS, any denture is Band 3 — £326.70 in England — and that single charge also covers other treatment in the same course, such as extractions.
What's the difference between NHS and private dentures?▼
NHS dentures are functional and use standard materials and fitting stages. Private dentures typically involve more appointments, extra try-ins, wider tooth and shade choices, and premium or flexible materials — which is what the higher price buys. Many patients are happy with NHS dentures; others, particularly with difficult lower jaws, feel the private difference is worth it. Discuss both with your dentist.
Acrylic or chrome partial dentures — which is better?▼
Acrylic partials are cheaper and easier to add teeth to later, but bulkier. Cobalt-chrome partials have a thin metal framework that's stronger, less bulky, kinder to gums and more secure on the remaining teeth — at a higher price (usually the top of the £300–£800 range privately; still Band 3 on the NHS where clinically appropriate).
How long do dentures last?▼
Typically 5–7 years before they need relining or remaking — not because the denture wears out, but because gums and bone slowly change shape, making the fit loose. Persistent looseness, rubbing or cracked bases are signs it's time. Keep having regular dental check-ups even with full dentures: the dentist also screens your mouth for oral cancer.
What can I do about loose dentures?▼
Short term, fixative creams help. If the fit has deteriorated, a reline or remake restores it. For persistently loose lower dentures, implant-retained dentures — usually two implants the denture clips onto — are the game-changer, typically from around £4,000 per arch privately. Speak to a dentist about which option fits your mouth and budget.
